PS-Resine gel a basso polistirene cross-linking. I polistirene a basso Cross-linking richiedono tipicamente l’uso di solventi che rigonfiano la resine in modo da permettere ai reagenti di accedere ai gruppi funzionali delle resine supportate . Nei casi in cui i solventi non rigonfiano le resine, può essere necessario aggiungere un co-solvente che è compatibile con le resine, ad esempio il THF.

MP-Resine macroporose polistirene ad alto cross-linking. Le resine macroporose ad alto cross-linking si rigonfiano significativamente molto meno nel solvente rispetto alle PS e ai reagenti e non dipendono dal rigonfiamento per essere efficaci, diversamente dalle loro amologhe PS. Invece i reagenti si diffondono attraverso la struttura porosa per raggiungere i siti reattivi. Per questo motivo, le resine MP possono essere utilizzate in volumi confinati dove il rigonfiamento sarebbe un problema e possono essere utilizzate con un ampia varietà di solventi
