The aim of the study was to investigate differences in the level of aflatoxin B1 (AFB1) in grains and dairy cattle feed. Grains and cattle feed sampled from farms were analysed for AFB1 using a validated ELISA immunoassay. AFB1 was found in 16.4% of all investigated samples, and exceeded permissible levels in maize, grain mixtures and dairy cattle feed.
The results revealed that AFB1 occurrence was dependent on the cultivation region, and is most likely associated with climatic conditions as the most critical factor for mould formation, and thus also AFB1 production.
Aflatoxins are a group of mold-induced toxins known to contaminate certain crops and cause damage to the liver.
