Pesticides have gone far in increasing food supply, important in a world expecting to have 9.8 billion people by 2050. However, the mechanisms that make pesticides effective in eliminating pests can also cause harm to humans and animals. News stories continue to point to contamination through spills and exposure through the respiratory system.
This application note demonstrates the performance of automated disk-based solid phase extraction (SPE), using Biotage® Horizon 5000 automated extraction system and Atlantic® DVB SPE disks, for concentration of organochlorine pesticides from whole water, prior to GC/MS analysis, following the requirements of EN16693:2015.

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) can be found in a number of water types, such as drinking water, surface water, ground water and wastewater. There are serval types of extraction techniques that can be implemented to remove them from water for measurement including liquid-liquid extraction (LLE), continuous liquid-liquid extraction (CLLE) and solid phase extraction (SPE). With LLE and CLLE there is little selectivity within the methods for difficult matrices or other compound interferences.
This study shows that the Biotage® 4790 Automated Extractor system, along with the Atlantic™ DVB disk, the DryDisk® separation membrane, and the DryVap® Concentrator System can be successfully used to analyze for Nonyl Phenol and Bisphenyl A in water samples. This sample preparation process is fully automated, requiring minimal human intervention, and allowing for reductions in sample processing costs.

Hormones in drinking water are a growing concern, since the presence of these compounds can potentially be linked to serious health hazards such as human developmental and reproductive side-effects. Hormones are introduced into our environment in several ways. Natural and synthetic hormones that are given to livestock, pass though the animals, runoff into surface water, and leach into underground water supplies. Humans also produce and excrete natural hormone waste every day.
Drinking water is a significant source of environmental exposure, especially for small children. Countries around the world have put regulations in place to monitor drinking water quality for a wide range of hazardous compounds. Methods such as SL 392-2007 in China, the EN methods in Europe and US methods such as method 525.2 cover a large suite of analytes of concern. They can be effectively extracted using solid phase extraction (SPE) disks and using GC/MS for detection.
US EPA method 525.2 may use solid phase extraction (SPE) to extract the analytes of interest from water samples. It includes a variety of quality control measures to ensure the method is under control throughout the analysis. The Biotage® Horizon 5000 was used in this study to extract the EPA Method 525.2 analytes from six prepared water samples. The Atlantic high-capacity C18 disks provided excellent recovery of the large suite of compounds extracted in water. The Biotage® Horizon 5000 system provided uniform performance and a hands-off approach to the extraction step. The reproducibility of the six runs was excellent and the average of the standard deviation values was 2.57%.
This application note demonstrates recoveries of all the analytes within tables 1–2 of EPA method 625.1 (plus a few analytes from table 3) obtained using the Biotage® Horizon 5000 with Atlantic® 8270 One Pass solid phase extraction disks, 8270 Carbon Cartridges Max-Detect cartridges, and 1.0 Micron Atlantic® Fast Flow Pre-Filters for analyte extraction. The DryDisk® Solvent Drying System and the TurboVap® II are used for solvent drying and concentration and analysis is by GC-MS.
Hexane extractable material (HEM), also known as Oil & Grease extraction is a simple water quality measurement. The measurement can be used to assess pollution for compliance or as a measure of influent contamination to protect a waste treatment plant from levels that might cause malfunction.
