Method for Determining Illicit Use of GHB

10 October 2014

GHB (γ-hydroxybutanoic acid) is an illegal central nervous system stimulating drug. Biotage has developed a simple method for extraction of GHB from urine with good analyte recovery, reproducibility and linearity at levels appropriate for determining illicit use of GHB.

GHB is sometimes described as a ‘date rape’ drug for its correlation with sexual assault cases. It also has alleged widespread use in the dance club scene.

This application note describes the extraction of GHB from urine using supported liquid extraction and subsequent analysis by GC/MS. ISOLUTE® SLE+ Supported Liquid Extraction plates and columns offer an efficient alternative to traditional liquid liquid extraction (LLE) for bioanalytical sample preparation, providing high analyte recoveries, no emulsion formation, and significantly reduced sample preparation.

GC/MS chromatography for GHB in urine (Cal 1) spiked at 2.5 ng/mL. Compared to other more traditional solid phase extraction procedures, this ISOLUTE® SLE+ method results in a baseline with reduced noise and thus offers greater confidence when qualifying GHB.
