History

Supporting breakthroughs in life science

Founded in 1969, Jones Chromatography specialized in gas chromatography columns, later expanding into flash systems and accessories, laying the foundation for Biotage.

Biotage® Flash 75 and Flash 150 support systems enabled purification from gram to kilogram scale, transforming lab workflows.

The development of Biotage® SNAP columns introduced pre-packed solutions for lab-scale purification, including simplified peptide workflows.

The Biotage® Selekt system and Biotage® Sfär columns brought a new level of efficiency and robustness to flash purification. The family later expanded with Biotage® Selekt Enkel for small-scale, routine purification in drug discovery and research labs, and with additional functionalities across both systems, creating a truly modular platform.

The Biotage® Initiator, launched in 2004, introduced microwave-assisted synthesis to organic and peptide workflows, cutting reaction times and increasing efficiency. It became a cornerstone of peptide research and paved the way for later systems such as Biotage® Initiator+ Alstra™, advancing automation, accuracy, and reproducibility.

Syro Wave™, developed in collaboration with MultiSynTech, combined microwave-assisted and parallel synthesis to further support peptide research. The launch of Initiator+ SP Wave soon followed, offering semi-automated synthesis with improved control and flexibility.

The introduction of Biotage® SNAP and later Biotage® Sfär prepacked columns together with the Biotage® Selekt flash system made peptide purification more convenient and efficient. The peptide purification offering was later complemented by parallel purification solutions for high-throughput peptide projects.

With the acquisition of PhyNexus in 2019, Biotage added automated high-throughput technology for protein and plasmid purification.

Biotage® PhyPrep system automated plasmid purification, supporting applications such as cell and gene therapy development. PhyTip® columns enabled flexible and efficient small-scale protein and plasmid purification through dual-flow chromatography, delivering high sample recovery.

The acquisition of Astrea Bioseparations reinforced Biotage’s expertise in biomolecules, adding advanced chromatography and nanofiber technologies to support emerging therapies in the biopharma segment.

Biotage’s roots in sample preparation trace back to the founding of International Sorbent Technologies (IST), manufacturing cartridges, plates, and manifolds. Many of those early experts are still with Biotage today, continuing to build a strong and evolving portfolio.

The TurboVap® line, acquired in 2010, and fully revamped with expanded functionality in 2017, continues to meet the needs of modern laboratories across a wide range of sample volumes.

The Biotage® Extrahera™ line was introduced in 2014 to meet rising demands for higher throughput and greater process control. It has since grown into a three-system family covering extended volume and format ranges.

For the Paris 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games, Biotage equipped the French Anti-Doping Laboratory with 11 Biotage® Extrahera™ workstations and TurboVap® systems, enabling automated testing of athletes for more than 700 compounds. We also supported testing during the Tokyo and London Olympic Games.

Biotage expanded its environmental portfolio to meet the growing need for PFAS and SVOC testing, beginning with the 2018 acquisition of Horizon Technologies and disk automation for EPA methods.

This was followed by the EVOLUTE® PFAS consumables range and Biotage® PrepXpert-8, a fully automated system purpose-built for PFAS workflows. To complement environmental testing, ISOLUTE® PLD+ consumables were developed to support PFAS analysis in human samples, an area expected to become increasingly important.

Biotage® Oligo SPE was developed specifically for efficient extraction of oligonucleotide-based therapeutics from biological samples, including plasma, serum, urine, and tissue homogenates. This is where Biotage’s expertise in sample preparation consumables meets the challenges of analytical chemists in pharmaceutical development, offering a toolbox supported by detailed method development guidelines and expert support.
